CRSS Indoor Cup 4!

CRSS Indoor Sailing Cup.

Race 4

Friday 24th february saw the start of Race 4.

Back by popular demand was the ’Round the Islands’ course, which might not have been the best choice for some teams as the racing conditions proved to be more challenging than usual.

’Yesterday’ , crewed by Jon and Ingela, took line honours and then went to their usual position of mixing it up at the back of the fleet, whilst ’Doris’, crewed by Lasse Lars and Sussssssssss, and ’Tricky’, crewed by Thomas and Ingela (the other Ingela!) fought for the lead.

’Adventura’, crewed by Jan Erik and Birgitta, and ’Stars and Stripes’, being single-handed by Tom Boelke, were competing hard in the middle of the pack, and all boats were hot on the heels of the race leaders.

’Doris’ took the lead, taking the outer route around ’First Island’, and managing to survive being almost dismasted by an errant wooden dice!   ’Tricky’ having read the sea state and weather brilliantly, opted for the more challenging inside route, and managed to successfully come out ahead of ’Doris’.  ’Adventura’, ’Yesterday’ and ’Stars and Stripes’ following closely behind, all taking the safer, outside route.

Very close sailing along the narrows to ’Goddammit Island’ saw ’Tricky’ edge in front, while ’Doris’, due to some navigational cock-ups, ended up sitting fast on the lee shore and being overtaken by a very fast ’Stars and Stripes’, who moved into 2nd place, closely followed by ’Adventura’ and ’Yesterday’. To add insult to injury, ’Doris’ have to cope with a man-overboard incident, which adds to their frustration and a radical course change sees them bringing up the back of the fleet. ’Tricky’ manage to hold their slim lead, whilst the rest of the fleet jockey and swap the remaining places, with ’Doris’ taking a far more leisurely pace at the back, and at one point seeming to have stopped for a swim, BBQ, and some sunbathing!!

Rounding the ’Naturist Island’, ’Tricky’ manage to hold their lead, but only just … at times only ahead by one boat length. At the cross-over, chaos ensues over who has right of way and once the fleet had untangled itself, ’Tricky’ was still out in front, being hotly persued by ’Stars and Stripes’, ’Adventura’, Yesterday’ and lastly … ’Doris’, who seem to have realised they were in a race and not on an Eskadasailing trip, and started pushing hard to catch up the rest of the fleet.

’Stars and Stripes’ takes the lead with a grinning Tom at the helm, but right behind is ’Tricky’, who are not giving up the fight to beat him over the line.

A problem with a sump almost costs ’Stars and Stripes’ the race, but with a scream of victory, Tom Boelke crosses the line first. ’Tricky’ at this point decides that now is the perfect time to stop and let the crew take a swim, so that they drift over the finish line in 2nd place!

’Doris’ battles through the fleet, trying to get a podium finish, but ’Adventura’ holds them off for a well deserved 3rd place, having had some serious problems to overcome throughout the entire race. ’Yesterday’ slips over the line in their usual 4th place, with ’Doris’ unfortunately, after such a hurculean effort to catch the fleet up, crawling over the line in 5th place …. never again will they be so knowledgeable about seamanship!!

The remaining teams that have been competing previously have all had problems that have stopped them from attending but everything is still wide open for the final race

CRSS Indoor Sailing Cup Race 3

The 3rd race of the series took place in rather mild conditions for the time of year, but again was well attended.

After consultation with the race committee, it was decided to race on the ’Round the Islands’ course as most of the race boats found it more fun … an odd decision but there you go!

A strong start, as usual, from Kerstin and Åke saw ’Ardanza’ take an early lead closely followed by ’Yesterday’, ’Stars and Stripes’, ’Tricky’, and ’Mercy’, with Jörgen and Marina on ’Rainbow’ trailing the fleet.

’Stars and Stripes’ had some chart problems as they came up the channel to the first mark, but not as badly as our friends on ’Windsong’ who are on their way to Thailand!! ’Stars and Stripes’, along with ’Tricky’ held the fleet at bay as they overtook everyone to take a good lead and be in a good position to take the first turn.

It was neck and neck around the outside of the first island, between ’Stars and Stripes’ (Capt Tom Boelke) and ’Tricky’ (Ingela, Thomas and Anna).

’Mercy’, (Viveca and Bosse) made a wild decision to take the inside route around the first island and ended up losing their spinnaker, but this was not as bad as Jörgen and Marina on ’Rainbow’ who were stopped by the committee boat and given a warning for not wearing bouyancy aids, and who then got lost in a fog bank!! Not a good day so far for the ’Rainbow’ crew.

’Tricky’ pulled ahead after the first turn, closely followed by ’Ardanza’, with chaos affecting the rest of the fleet. ’Yesterday’ was forced to do a ’man overboard’ manouvre, whilst ’Stars and Stripes’ had to carry out a hasty change of direction and some very quick hole patching after striking a semi-submerged container!!

Rounding the second turn and the racing is so close, with all boats vying for the lead but only ’Tricky’ making the most of the ever changing wind shifts and bizarre tidal patterns as they head south west to the final turns.

’Tricky’ pulled comfortably ahead, with no competition to worry about as the rest of the fleet try to out-manouvre each other to get the best position for the downwind leg to the finish line. Some very close racing all the way to the finish line saw the following results :

CrSS Indoor Sailing Cup

CSS Indoor Sailing Cup.

Race 1

The first race in the series kicked off with a simple ’Race Around The Cans’.
6 boats entered, Ardanza, Yesterday, Mercy, Charmaya, Windsong and ‘Stars and Stripes’ … an American owned Comfort 26!!
The main competition was in the middle of the pack, with Ardanza taking and holding a comfortable lead. The remaining boats, whilst suffering various mishaps like grounding, losing masts and sails, and one even hitting a stray whale, fought for the remaining places. Some close, tactical, and rather ‘bitchy’ sailing was had whilst Ardanza kept glancing behind them to watch the fun as they cruised to a well deserved finish line gun. Mercy and Windsong argued for 2nd and 3rd places whilst some ‘irregular’ sailing (almost cheating but that’s a bit too strong!) from the American boat saw them sneak over the line for a 4th placing.
Results for the 1st Race are as follows;
1st Ardanza – Åke och Kerstin 6points
2nd Mercy – Viveca och Bosse 5 points
3rd Windsong -Karin och Gunnar 4 points
4th ’Stars and Stripes’ -Tom och Lars E 3points
5th Yesterday -Jon och Ingela 2 points
6th Charmaya – Lars Åke 1 point

Race 2

This race was a fairly straightforward ‘Around the Islands’ race. A clear course around a group of islands with the possibility to take some inshore routes for a faster course time, rather than following the deeper water course.
Obviously, with following shallower, narrower channels, the risks of grounding and other potential accidents are a lot higher, but all competitors studied the ground and course well and made informed decisions!
‘Yesterday’ took an early lead, with good winds all the way down to the first island, with the rest of the fleet fighting for position in a very tight manner.
Having the advantage, ‘Yesterday’ sneaked through the narrows on the inside, whilst ‘Ardanza’ took the outer course around the back of the island making excellent time on the longer route.
‘Mercy’ tried to follow ‘Yesterday’s line on the inshore track, but mis-read their charts and ended up in last place for a moment, ‘Charmaya’ taking the same route through but without mishap. With ‘Ardanza’ almost be-calmed at one point, they still managed to take the lead from ‘Yesterday’ after the latter had an argument with a high speed ferry that almost ruined their chances of continuing in the race, and put them into 2nd place. As we have come to expect, ‘Ardanza’ held the lead and fought off challenges from the rest of the fleet, as they sailed down through the ‘Chicken Run’ and into open waters.
‘Ardanza’ stretched their lead by a clear 13 boat lengths as the fleet rounded the nudist island … maybe crews were distracted, maybe not, but ‘Ardanza’ held a commanding lead with Kerstin in obvious control!
‘Mercy’ pulled forward to hold 2nd place while ‘Yesterday’ was stopped by Tullen for a ships papers check, dashing their hopes for a good podium place!
Charmaya had a relatively easy time around the course, coming over the line in a comfortable 4th place.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, ‘Windsong’ and ‘Stars and Stripes’ failed to finish. (They also failed to start, but that’s another story!)
Results for Race 2.
1st Ardanza – Kerstin och Åka 6 points
2nd Mercy – Viveca och Bosse 5 points
3rd Yesterday – Jon och Ingela 4 points
4th Charmaya – Lars Åke 3 points
DNF ‘Windsong’ 1 point
DNF ‘Stars and Stripes’ 1 point

Overall Standings after 2 races.

1st Ardanza 12 points
2nd Mercy 10 points
3rd Yesterday 6 points
4th Windsong 5 points
5th Charmaya 4 points
5th Stars and Stripes 4 points

To be continued!
